Looking into the Deep

Updated: Aug 5, 2020

By Iana Grullón-Penkova

The TRACE project is constantly looking for new research pathways and opportunities, that within the scope of climate change and hurricane disturbances in tropical forests can explain fundamental ecological concepts. In this occasion we are exploring deep soil root and microbes to better understand their structure, functioning, and diversity along the soil profile. For this we open a series of soil pits (1 m deep) within our study area to extract a series a of root and soil samples from the pits, and plan to instrument them along the way.

The work for this component is a collaboration among various TRACE scientists who are exploring diverse aspects of the deep soil environment.

October was our first sampling event with plans to resample in the future.
